I love libraries. Right now I have vast experience mainly with the children’s sections of school and public libraries. One day in the distant future I will once again become familiar with the entire library, perhaps even the adult fiction section. I doubt I will be using the computers at a library, but clearly many people do and it is an important matter of justice for internet to be available to everyone. So this research, which might seem a bit dry and pointless, in fact is entirely relevant to an inclusive, just community. It considers how architects can design libraries that are “at once dynamic, engaging, supportive, and accessible.” I have personal views about the design of contemporary libraries, but will defer to the experts here. I love seeing libraries being renovated, but I am terrified by the decreasing number of books. And it is a tragedy that so many secondary schools are going “paper-free” – as though it’s some kind of sustainable policy. Sad faces.
